What is Trauma-Informed Counselling?
Trauma-informed counselling is an approach to therapy that recognises the widespread impact of trauma on individuals' lives and aims to create a safe, empathetic and supportive environment for those who have experienced trauma. Building trust and creating a space where clients feel physically and emotionally safe, by establishing clear boundaries and respecting client’s autonomy is essential for healing from Trauma. This approach is for individuals who have experienced sexual, physical, psychological or emotional abuse or experienced some other traumatic event(s) in their life.
What does our work involve?
Our work together involves collaboration and empowerment, where you take an active role in your healing process by setting goals, making personal decisions and through psychoeducation. Psychoeducation is an important part of this process in understanding that the symptoms and internal conflicts you are experiencing make sense and exist because of what you have experienced. Seeing your symptoms, inner conflicts and coping mechanisms from a different perspective, in that they helped you survive the trauma by minimising the pain of it, is an important part of your recovery.
Recovery from trauma is not a quick easy fix, it takes time with the right support to recover, and this time is different for each person. I believe the key to successful counselling and recovery is the ability to build a safe, quality, reliable therapeutic relationship based on trust, honesty and respect and to ‘be with’ the client through their darkest times.
The path is not linear, it is full of ups and downs, twists and turns, breakdowns and breakthroughs and obstacles to overcome. You may go only so far with one counsellor or type of therapy and then feel you need a break, or you need something different and that is ok. This is your journey; you are in the driving seat and can steer it in the direction YOU want. Just remember recovery IS possible and It would be an honour to embark on this journey alongside you.
